Writing a Winning Grant Proposal

Experienced grant writers understand that the process is sometimes more art than science. For researchers with a ground-breaking topic to explore, making sure that the proposal excites those responsible for awarding the grant is critical to receiving funding. Grant writers can engage their readers effectively by using a number of tool and tips. These include:

  • Use common buzzwords found in the grant announcement or on the organisation’s website.

  • Compose short, direct sentences. Long rambling prose tends to lose the reader’s interest.

  • Write one draft and pour the heart of the project into it. Try not to redraft too many times as this can lead to over-analysis and dilute the novelty of the project being proposed.

  • Proofread the proposal, and then ask a colleague or trusted friend to review for novelty, significance, and innovation.

  • Proofread the proposal, and then ask a professional editor to edit for spelling, syntax, and grammar.

  • Review past award-winning applications, and attempt to emulate them.
